1. BSP & Platform Dependency

  • Since Qualcomm BSPs are typically provided through set vendors such as LG or Harman (Samsung), managing the delivery of debug versions and narrowing down analysis points may take more time compared to smartphone development.
  • Development schedules may be impacted by the timing of BSP updates, and provisional releases or other mitigation plans may be necessary when alignment cannot be ensured.
  • Careful coordination is required between the finalization schedule of software components—such as modem firmware, bootloader, and others—and the production timeline.

2. Regulatory Certification & Compliance

  • Proactive consideration is also required for certification processes—such as PTCRB, GCF, and carrier approvals (e.g., AT&T, Verizon)—which must be addressed for each SKU and cannot be fully controlled internally. This includes referencing certification results from previous models.
  • Support for LTE / 5G / Cat-M1 / NB-IoT increases testing complexity.

3. Handover and Roaming Design

  • Seamless handover among 3G ⇄ 4G ⇄ 5G ⇄ Wi-Fi is critical for high-speed mobility.
  • Consider low-latency communication for V2X and autonomous driving use cases.
  • Ensure session continuity and QoS control during network switching.

4. Battery-Backed Operation

  • DCM should remain operational even after vehicle power-off, using its internal battery.
  • Power management should resemble smartphone architecture.
  • Carefully design and review wake-up triggers (RTC, CAN, modem events, etc.).

5. Emergency Call (eCall) Compliance

  • SKU comply with systems like EU eCall and US NG911.
  • DCM should operate independently to trigger emergency calls after a crash.
  • Incorporate GNSS accuracy, priority control, and voice call availability into design.
